Our take
The First 44 is the boat that had to make Beneteau's revived First line credible above forty feet. Sitting between the Slovenian-built First 36 and the First 53, it answers one awkward question: why not simply buy an Oceanis 46.1 for less money? Roberto Biscontini's reply is a narrower waterline, more rocker in the canoe body and twin balanced rudders — a hull that starts surfing later than a modern scow but keeps moving in the light Mediterranean airs the boat will actually meet. Two keels, 2.15 m or 2.60 m, and 350 litres of water ballast a side, filled electrically from the helm consoles in about three minutes, stand in for crew on the rail. The reservations are real ones: little foot room outboard of the winches, a shallow sail locker, thin stowage in the forward cabin. Three cabins and two heads keep it usable as a family boat. It is still too recent to have a proper second-hand market, and the few resales trade close to list.
