Our take

The Excess 11 is the boat that gave the brand its own tooling. Beneteau launched Excess in 2019 with the 12 and 15, both reworked from Lagoon moulds; the 11, unveiled at Düsseldorf in January 2020, was drawn from a blank sheet. VPLP kept the hulls slim for the class and stepped the mast further forward than Lagoon practice, which enlarges the mainsail and gives a more orthodox balance; Patrick le Quément shaped the exterior, Nauta the interior. It sails better than nine tonnes suggests, and it is steered from twin helms set low at the aft quarters rather than from a raised bulkhead station — the whole argument of the marque. The reservations are honest ones: two heads whatever the layout, 300 litres of water, and a payload margin that a fully equipped liveaboard will use up. Below twelve metres it has few direct rivals, which explains the 200th hull launched by March 2024. Values have held, though a buyer should check whether the boat left the yard in Pulse Line trim.
