Our take

The Lagoon 40 is the entry point of the yard's sailing range: launched in 2018 to replace both the 39 and the 400 in a single move, it held that slot until the 43 took over. VPLP compacted the 42's recipe — chined hulls, aft-stepped mast, self-tacking jib — while keeping a large foretriangle that leaves room for downwind sails, the one concession made to speed. The programme is family cruising and charter: four to twelve berths depending on version, two to four heads, and a platform sound enough for a trade-wind Atlantic crossing. The reservation is well known: on 11.74 m and 10.5 tonnes light, living volume and above all payload margin are tight, and a heavily loaded 40 quickly loses what little liveliness it had. On the used market supply is plentiful and price spreads are wide, depending on whether a hull came out of an intensive charter fleet or private ownership.

Worth noting

  • 80 m² upwind sail area, 18.86 m air draft
  • British Yachting Awards 2021, Multihull of the Year
  • Saildrives 2 × 45 hp, 400 L fuel tank
  • Three or four cabins, up to four heads
