Our take
The Excess 12 was the first Excess. Launched at Cannes in September 2019 alongside the 15, it stood on adapted Lagoon 40 moulds: VPLP redrew the hull with chines, and Excess changed the deck, the rig and the steering rather than the platform underneath. That origin explains both its qualities and its ceiling — the interior volume, the flow between cockpit and saloon and the Lagoon parts supply are all there, but the boat carries ten tonnes light and never quite escaped the family resemblance. What it did change was the helm: two low wheels aft, a square-top mainsail and a self-tacking jib, a deliberate answer to the raised flybridge station of the volume brands. It took Best Boat of the Year 2020 and did a great deal of charter service. Excess dropped it from the range when the Marc Lombard-designed 13 arrived in 2024. Secondhand it trades between roughly €330,000 and €450,000, the cheapest way into the marque, with the caveat that it is the least Excess-like of the Excess boats.
