Our take

The Leopard 50 replaced the Leopard 48 in 2018 and became the boat Robertson and Caine used to prove that a hull conceived around charter economics could still be sold to private owners. The brief handed to Simonis Voogd was volume without paying for it twice: eight metres of beam, a genuine flybridge seating ten, an aft cockpit flush with the saloon, and a forward cockpit reached through its own door — three separate outdoor rooms, which is precisely what a charter guest is paying for. Twin 57-horsepower Yanmars are modest for 20.6 tonnes, and the 80-horsepower option exists because owners kept asking for it; upwind the boat is stiff and predictable rather than quick, fixed keels and payload closing off any ambition. Layouts run from a three-cabin owner's version to five cabins and five heads. New it listed near €869,000. Used, the market splits: Moorings 5000 phase-outs anchor the bottom, well-equipped private hulls sit clearly above.

Worth noting

  • Cruising World Best Charter Boat 2019 in Moorings 5000 trim
  • 23.52 m air draft for 154 m² of upwind sail area
  • 920 litres of fuel against 700 litres of water
  • Optional forepeak berth and heads for crewed operation
